From the VeloceToday Archives, April 2021

John Bond took over a distressed Road and Track in the fall of 1952, but always admitted that Elaine was the brains of the outfit. David E. Davis wrote (C&D Nov 1990) that she “…was the ramrod that turned R&T into the magazine it was in the Sixties and Seventies.” [Read more…] about Road & Track, the Bond Years

Donald Healey Goes Hollywood and More

September 2, 2024 By pete

By Pete Vack and Jim Sitz

In their new book Nash-Healey, A Grand Alliance, authors John Nikas and Hervé Chevalier bring to light Donald Healey’s 5,000-mile ten-day cross-country journey through America in 1948, driving a new Healey Westland in every conceivable weather situation all the way to Los Angeles.

Hollywood welcomed Donald and Geoffrey Healey, who in turn never missed a photo op. Here is the well-traveled Westland with starlet Barbara Lawrence. Photo from Nash-Healey, A Grand Alliance

Healey and son Geoffrey were amazed at the enthusiasm and knew that he could succeed in selling his cars in the U.S. According to Nikas, “In his retirement in during the 1980s, he would ponder what might have happened had he built sports car in the United States rather than England.” He returned to the UK with many contacts and ideas, but left the appropriately named Westland in California. Jim Sitz picked up the trail from there.

Jim Sitz: Faces ’57

January 15, 2024 By pete

Behold the art of Jim Sitz, an 18-year-old Californian who was already steeped in racing knowledge and an expert photographer when arrived in Europe in the summer of that magical, epochal, dangerous year of 1957. Sitz was not wealthy, but worked and saved for two years in order to afford the trip that would change his life forever. And after 67 years his photographs and memories are still enriching our lives.

We have assembled a portrait gallery of fourteen of the greatest race drivers of the era, adding Jim’s personal recollections including his first-hand report of Fangio’s German Grand Prix. Also herein are Jean Behra, Mike Hawthorn, Luigi Musso, Stirling Moss, Peter Collins, Oliver Gendebien, Ron Flockhart, Archie Scott Brown, Masten Gregory, Wolfgang von Trips, Phil Hill, Harry Schell and Ken Miles.

Story and photos by Jim Sitz

Lead Photo: Masten Gregory (29 February 1932 – 8 November 1985) sitting in the Testa Rossa prototype before the 1957 Swedish 6 Hour on August 11 where the car was retired with gearbox failure. A week earlier at the Nurburgring I joked with him, saying he’d should be very careful and that I’d seen him spin his C type Jag at March Field in 1953. “Oh God, you mean you were there?” he replied. More on the R&T Figoni Cover Car

October 23, 2023 By pete

The Delahaye was on cover of the February 1949 edition of Road & Track. The photograph was taken in front of the famous Ciros Nightclub. This is the same car which was photographed later that year by Strother MacMinn.

Strother MacMinn was one of my closest and dearest friends. I met him in 1951. He was a real gay blade and man about town, the Cary Grant of automotive circles.

Who was D.M. Bartley Part 2

February 27, 2023 By pete

Bartley talks with Pat O’Connor at Trenton, N.J. She was reportedly the first woman journalist to obtain a media pass at Indy. Photographer unknown.

This week we learn about D.M. Bartley from Denise McCluggage, Karl Ludvigsen, and the Editor.

Read Part 1

Denise McCluggage:

Diana Bartley wanted to be accepted for what she was, a hard-working, professional journalist when there simply few women doing that. People today cannot believe how rare women were even on large newspapers. Women might do interviews involving food or fashion or kittens-up-a-tree rescue stories but never hard news. Who was D.M. Bartley?

February 20, 2023 By pete

D.M. Bartley with Jean Behra, probably in 1959 at Sebring. We think 1959 as he is wearing a Ferrari lapel pin and placed second at the Sebring 12 hours driving a Ferrari 250 TR 59 with Cliff Allison. Others think that it might be 1957, the year Behra won with Fangio in a Maserati. But wearing a Ferrari lapel pin? Photo possibly by Charles. A. Lyble Jr.

Like many of our readers, I often read articles by a ‘D.M. Bartley’ in a variety of automobile magazines in the 1950s and 1960s. And then, as now, I was fascinated by automotive journalists, be they Ken Purdy or Henry Manney, but there was scant information about Bartley, who remained a mystery for a number of years. Years ago, I decided to ask a few writers to tell us what they knew about D.M. Bartley. Jim Sitz, Karl Ludvigsen, and the late Denise McCluggage all pitched in with their impressions. Doing more research, through Clark University, we found Abigail Kimball, Bartley’s friend and neighbor, who was glad to provide even more information about Diana Bartley as well as a few photos from the Bartley collection. We begin with Abigail’s story.

Abigail Kimball:

Diana Bartley was born on June 18, 1926 in Toledo, Ohio. She died on July 31, 2011 at age 85 in New York City. [Read more…] about Who was D.M. Bartley?

Allen R. Kuhn: FIII in California

Story by Pete Vack with Jim Sitz

Following up on our Formula III series, we had not written anything on the class in America. But were there 500 cc events in the States?

Yes, they were raced throughout America but no one paid much attention. Says Jim Sitz, “Formula III never took off in California or the U.S.A. since the fans wanted to see the big, powerful and noisy cars. The most popular events for a normal weekend of racing were the Corvette and modified classes. The FIII cars were noisy but did not appear to be very fast.”

Tim Considine

Photo of Tim Considine by Bruce Benedict

On Thursday March 3, Tim Considine, 81, passed away. Actor, author, photographer and historian, Considine dedicated many years to making sure that American drivers were recognized for their achievements on the international racing scene. First, with American Grand Prix Racing Considine devoted a chapter to each one of the Americans who tried their hand at Formula One racing. Second was his masterpiece, Twice Around the Clock, Yanks at Le Mans the book that won him international acclaim. He was working on his second set of Yanks at Le Mans when he passed away at home. Our condolances to his wife Willie and his family.

Many of our readers were close friends of Considine. We begin with Jodi Ellis, who worked with him on his last book and became a good friend: [Read more…] about Tim Considine

Palm Springs, March 22, 1952 in color

December 13, 2021 By pete

March 22, 1952, Palm Springs California. I was there cheering Roger on — wearing my specially-made Simca T-shirt that had amused Barlow when I came to his dealership earlier that same year. This is the first of the two Roger Barlow Simcas, seen here with mechanic Bill Pringle behind the wheel. Pringle raced this car in the event, while Barlow himself drove the new Simca special, #62, with right hand drive. Pringle finished second and Barlow fifth in the main event. Al Coppel won the class in his MG special.

From the VeloceToday Archives, June 13, 2017

Studebaker designer and part time photographer Bob Temple recorded sports car events at the Studebaker Proving Grounds and the Press on Regardless Rally in the early 1950s. Temple also went out west, and was there with Kodachrome for the Palm Springs races on March 22, 1952. Most remarkably, Jim Sitz was there as well and recorded all the cars on his invaluable set of index cards. He was therefore able to identify and comment on the cars and the personalities at the race. Our thanks to both the late Bob Temple and the very much still alive Jim Sitz.

I had the good fortune to attend the March 22, 1952 event at Palm Springs, California. The photographs were taken by Bob Temple. I also had attended earlier events there in April and October of 1951.
