Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp
We continue with the London Concours whilst Jonathan is off to yet another event in the UK.
Alfa class

1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce, Purchased new by Richard Shepherd Baron who at the time was working for Alfa Romeo in the UK. He had ordered an alleggerita specification model but received a 750 transition model so had the lighter alloy panels retrofitted. He then raced the car extensively with much success during the 1959 and 1960 season including racing (with factory support) in the Coppa Inter Europa at Monza.

1971 Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV, First registered in Northumberland and largely original having once been owned by Richard Norris & Richard Banks of Alfaholics fame.

Known in UK Alfa circles as the “Le Bon car” due to once being owned by Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon and his wife Yasmin. 1972 Alfa Romeo Montreal.

1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato Spider. Archival evidence suggests that this example has Mille Miglia history linked to Giovanni Battista Santinelli who finished seventh in 1932, sixth in 1933, and 25th in 1934. He retained the car until 1937 then after it spent time in Eritrea and Kenya it arrived in the UK in 1948.

1933 Alfa Romeo 8C Tourer, Imported into the UK by Thompson & Taylor of Brooklands in 1937. The 8C remains a matching numbers example that was once owned by the Regent Oil Company, and was latter carefully restored by the late Paul Grist.

1993 Alfa Romeo RZ, one of 278 examples built making it rarer than the hardtop SZ. Not sure if the bonnet struts are factory though.

1977 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV, The current owner has known this car since new when it was bought by an Italian friend of the family, Toni Genna, who collected the then-10 year old from school. It both impressed and slightly terrified him on the drive home. The current owner managed to purchase the car in 2001 for the price of a good meal and a case of Italian wine, the car having been off the road due to rust since 1997. A bare metal restoration followed and the GTV is now used as his everyday summer car.
American Muscle

1969 Dodge Coronet Super Bee. Imported into the UK in 1992 this well spec’d Super Bee is understood to be one of only 27 hardtops finished in Copper Metallic, and one of possibly two with its combination of options.

1969 Chevrolet El Camino. Purchased from a Los Angles dealer in 2017 after an exhaustive search for a rust free example, which the dealer assured the buyer it was but just needed some paint. Upon picking the car up from Tilbury docks the new owner discovered that the car needed much more than a bit of paint having been used as a builder truck. A major in-house restoration followed.

1970 Plymouth Superbird. I understand that NASCAR regulations required Plymouth to build one car for each USA dealer. This example is number 1122 and is fitted with the 440 ci six pack motor and was first registered to Charles Lewis of Albany New York on the 2nd April 1970.

Described as the more upmarket sibling to the Mustang, this 1968 Mercury Cougar XR7 was built at Dearborn on the 23rd July and sold through G.K. Hardt & Co in Santa Rosa California on the 13th November 1968. Being an XR7, the Cougar has a more luxurious interior treatment including upgraded instrumentation and plusher trim.

1969 Chevrolet Chevelle 396 Super Sport. Originally supplied by Humphrey Chevrolet Milwaukee for $3895.75. This example, finished in code 72 Huggar Orange, has only covered 1300 miles since undergoing a full body-off restoration between 2009 and 2011. A matching numbers example retaining its engine and Muncie M20 four speed manual gearbox.

1969 Shelby Mustang GT350. This example is the ninth 1969 GT350 built and began life as Ford’s West Coast promotions car driven by Shelby executive Ray Geddes. Sold in March 1969 after 12,916 miles of promotional duties, it spent some time in a Dutch museum before spending 27 years with Adrian Dromey. Finished in its original Silver Jade, it retains its factory panels, FMX Cruise-O-Matic transmission, Traction-Lok axle, Tilt away steering, Sport Deck rear seat, AM/FM radio and tinted glass.

1970 Dodge Charger 500 SE 440 Magnum. This example is believed to be one of less than 200 1970 Chargers finished in Burnt Metallic Orange with Gator skin vinyl roof. Being a 500 meant a higher level of equipment, and having the SE package brought a more opulent interior.
Porsche Sonderwunsch class, celebrating Porsche Special Wishes Department

1989 Porsche 930 Turbo SE Cabriolet Flachbau. One of only 15 built and one of seven built in right hand drive. Originally a UK press demonstrator and finished by Sonderwunsch in Minerva Blue to make it jump out in photographs which I think it still does.

This 1989 Porsche 930 Turbo S is one of just 21 examples constructed by Porsche Exclusive, a forerunner to Sonderwunsch. Designed for customers that wanted the Flachbau specification but without the 1984 bodywork. Built for its first California based owner, believed to be IMSA Porsche racer Kerry Morse, it gained rear arch vents, a deeper front air dam with vertical oil cooler, lowered sports suspension and a wider rear track, RUF 17 inch wheels, and the 930/66 3.3 litre engine with K27 Turbo raising output to 330 bhp.

1992 Porsche 964 Turbo S Leichtbau, this example is chassis 86, the final car from a worldwide production run of only 11 delivered to the UK in right hand drive. It was the first lightweight Turbo model shedding 396lb over the standard model by reducing the sound proofing, deleting the rear seats, manual windows, no power steering, RS bucket seats and door cards, carbon composite panels, and thinner glass. The single turbo 3.3 litre engine was uprated to 381 bhp, the suspension was lowered by 40mm, and stronger brakes fitted.

Inspired by the 935 racer, this 1984 930 Turbo Flachbau is a rare factory optioned car first registered in the UK in June 1984.

1986 930 Turbo SE Flachbau, one of 230 pre-production models ordered directly for the factory. Supplied new in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and finished in paint to sample Ferrari Rossa Corsa with walnut trim and magnolia leather.

The first owner of this 1986 Porsche 928 specified Muscat Brown Metallic paint, Pasha and Champagne leather seats, Champagne leather trim elsewhere, and a brown leather dashboard, Believed to be a unique specification with the work carried out by Porsche’s exclusive department as these trim options were not catalogue choices.
Wild Cards class

2026 Morgan Midsummer, a limited production run barchetta developed with Pininfarina and built around Morgan’s CX generation bonded aluminium platform. Beneath the aluminium hand formed bodywork lies the BMW-derived turbocharged 3.0 straight six producing 335 bhp. Production will be limited to 50 examples, all individually commissioned of which this is the only one finished in Viola.

1961 Sunbeam Harrington Alpine. The glass fibre roof designed to suit the Alpine was created by Thomas Harrington Ltd of Hove and based on the Sunbeam Alpine series I & II. Around 120 examples were produced of which about 26 survive. This example is especially rare due to its cantilever boot with its clever opening mechanism. It also features a fold down rear seat creating a flat rear floor area that was later adapted for the Harrington Le Mans. Power is provided by a George Hartwell tuned engine producing approximately 100 bhp.

1973 BMW 2002 Baur Targa. The current owner purchased the car in July 1980 as a daily driver. A head gasket failure on Live Aid Day in 1985 resulted in a home engine rebuild. Unfortunately rust forced the car off the road for many years until in 2018 a rebuild was completed by JFI Classic Cars.

1995 Ferrari F355, Listed as a rare right hand drive example in Blu Le Mans with a manual gearbox and factory fitted carbonfibre racing seats. I am told that being an early example it benefits from having the more desirable Bosch Mototronic 2.7ECU, tall tool kit and factory non-airbag steering wheel.

Not in the American Muscle class but in the Wild Card class, a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray 427 Roadster. Sold new in Summerville, Georgia and finished in Rally Red with a black interior, close ratio four speed ‘rock crusher’ gearbox, side pipes, knock-off wheels and positraction independent rear axle, deleted power windows, brakes and steering. In 2019 a full frame off restoration was completed; known in London as the ‘Camden Corvette’ due to its early morning noise!

1987 Citroen CX 25 Prestige Turbo 2, Combining the long wheel base Prestige body with the GTi Turbo 2 drive train it was the top of the Citroen range in the 1980s, far more expensive than the equivalent BMW or Mercedes, only five right hand drive Prestige Turbo 2s were built.
Group A Rally cars class

This is a faithful recreation of the 1990 Subaru Legacy RS as driven by Per Eklund on the 1992 RAC Rally.

This Rover SD1 Vitesse registration A480WOE is the final car built by Longbridge Motorsport in 1984 and competed in the first European Group A Championship. Later that year it was used as the Austin Rover camera car during the Donnington Park Rallysprint and during this high profile event it is understood that Nigel Mansell, Keke Rosberg, Jimmy McRae, and Michele Mouton either competed in, or drove the car during the event.

Built for Group A rallying by MCD Services of Widness Cheshire, this 1983 Ford Escort RS1600i was driven by Louise Aitken Walker and achieved many a notable result on major British and Irish rallies.

Originally built by an ex-Ralliart mechanic to International Group N regulations for John Perrott who used it on the British rally scene, this Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III (Evo 3) was later driven with much success by Tim Freeman. Now owned by Lee Kedward who has developed it from a Group N car into a customer Group A car.

1989 BMW M3 E30, Originally built by Prodrive for Bernard Beguin to use in the French Tarmac Championship, its first outing being the Rallye Alpine.

This 1991 Opel Calibra Turbo 4 x 4 is a genuine ex-works Group A car built by the Opel/Vauxhall factory and is considered to be the only Opel Group A rally car produced. Its competition career covered many major events up to 1997 including being driven by Stig Blomqvist on the 1993 Swedish and RAC Rallys. Power is provided by a 280 bhp C20LET 2.0 litre 16 valve turbo engine.

This 1992 Toyota Celica GT4 ST185 was built by TTE for Carlos Sainz and Luis Moya to contest the 1992 Acropolis Rally. Running in second place on day two, Sainz crashed heavily on stage 13, Rendina, with the car leaving the road and rolling into a ravine. It was later sold by TTE to Toyota Sweden. Thomas Radstrom drove it during 1994 and 1995 winning the 1994 Swedish Rally. Henning Solberg brought it in 1996 and Petter Solberg drove it to his first rally victory on the Otsfold Rally.
