Ferrari Fever: A Life

A photo taken before the 1984 Mille Miglia. Paul Schouwenburg with the champagne, son Lennart in the foreground. This is his life.

Review by Pete Vack

The book is available in two hard copy formats, Standard and *Deluxe, both with dustjackets and slipcases.

Right from the start you realize that Paul Schouwenburg is a fellow traveler. The minute he writes of finding that an Alfa 1900 is strangely out of time due to the distributor being inserted into the block at 360 degrees out you know he’s a car guy. When he takes a much modified Mini Cooper and terrorizes half of Holland you can relate; he has problems with the Bosch solenoid on his Ferrari, you recall having the same adventures in good starting; testing an old aluminum head, he pours water into it to do a pressure test and finds it would make a great sprinkler, we sympathize; when he restored cars on his own, towed them with ropes, or drove them home on a wing and a prayer, you’ve been there; the pain is understood when he is beaten in a deal to buy an ultra-rare Ferrari. When he had to borrow money from his father to buy that 212 Inter with engine problems, it rings bells. [Read more…] about Ferrari Fever: A Life

The Best GT OSCA Ever Made

March 18, 2014 By pete

Hugues Vanhoolandt focuses on the OSCA Vignale sn 1153.

By Pete Vack, Jack Thomas and Paul Schouwenburg

Of all the great cars owned by Paul Schouwenburg which found a place in his new book Ferrari Fever, (read review) this one is not as famous as the Alfas and Ferraris that dominated Schouwenburg’s collections, but it is perhaps one of the most interesting and beautiful cars ever built. The OSCA, the Vignale 1500 SN 1153 MT4 2AD Berlinetta is also arguably OSCA’s greatest Grand Touring car, and most certainly the most original.

OSCA MT4 1500 Vignale together with our Aurelia B24 during Milano-Sanremo. My wife Catherine drove her B24 spider America Nardi and I the Osca with son Olivier-Paul Schouwenburg-

One of only four road going OSCA MT4s built at the factory and designated to receive Berlinetta coachwork, OSCA 1153 was purchased from the factory by a Frenchman, Monsieur J.L. Abreu, at the Turin Show in 1955. In the late 1960s, the car was sold to the famous collector, Walter Grell of Switzerland, who kept the car for over 30 years and drove it sparingly. In 2000, it was purchased by Dr. Paul Schouwenburg who relates the following:

Old at Geneva with Alessandro Gerelli

Story and photos by Alessandro Gerelli

A glance at the past at Geneva

Old classic cars are very rarely seen at the Geneva Autos Show. But this year, the number of wonderful old jewels has increased and were very interesting.

In one of the halls there was an exhibition of Le Mans winners and cars from the 20s to today, which attracted the attention of the visitors.

The cars in the show include the first Le Mans winner, a Chenard & Walcker driven by Lagache and Leonard at the speed of 92 km/h, the Ferrari 166MM of Thomson and Chinetti who won the first post WWII edition of the race and many other cars, including the French Matra, Peugeot and Rondeau.

A few more old Alfas were around plus an Ermini and a lovely Abarth 695. [Read more…] about Old at Geneva with Alessandro Gerelli

Huayra for Pagani!

Story and photos by Alessandro Gerelli

Gerelli looks at the Italian Supercars at this year’s Geneva Auto Show.

The Geneva Motor show is a traditional event that attracts thousands of visitors every year from all over the world. All the car manufacturers present their new models, including super cars and concept cars.

I first wanted to photograph Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, and Abarth cars, but I could not avoid the Pagani, Bugatti and some masterpieces of the most famous Italian coach builders, including a couple of cars coming from Slovakia.

Most of these cars are dream cars, but……let us dream! [Read more…] about New at Geneva with Alessandro Gerelli

Eugenio Castellotti by Graham Gauld

Eugenio Castellotti at the wheel of the Lancia-Ferrari at the 1956 British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Story and photos by Graham Gauld

There are times when we can all be rather pretentious. I fell into that trap thirty years ago when I had the idea of writing a subjective book on the psychology of the racing driver. I have always had an interest in the variety of people who come into motor sport and what makes them tick. I had read a lot about psychology in general, then dropped the idea when I realized what a fool I might have made of myself. However, if Central Casting in Hollywood were ever asked for a “racing driver type” back in the 1950s, they would have to have chosen Eugenio Castellotti. Bizzarrini Lamborghini

One interesting car which came and went through my hands while working for auction companies was a prototype for the America, based on a Lamborghini 350GT. The story, which came directly from Giotto himself, is that after designing the V12 engine for Lamborghini he somehow ended up with a rolling chassis for a 350GT, possibly as part payment. He used this chassis to develop the car, which would become the America. I believe this is the only genuine Bizzarrini GT with a Lamborghini V12 motor, although I think another copy exists somewhere. Prettiest pair: Graeme Wright’s Mallala leads its predecessor, the Streamliner of John Becker into turn 1.

Story and photos by Vince Johnson

With the Australian GT Championship missing from the program at the opening round of the Aussie V8 Supercars at the Adelaide street circuit, the only Italians to be found were the club and dealer displays of the two-wheeled variety. Taking the place of the Gallardos and 458 Italias was the Touring Car Masters category. Six years ago, this group of 60’s and 70’s muscle cars held their first race around the streets of the South Australian capital at this event and twenty-seven of them formed up behind the pace car for the first race late on Friday afternoon. Words of wisdom from one who knows

(Note that none of the photos herein should be misconstrued as to being a replicar; they represent Bizzarrinis in various forms.)

My first encounter with Bizzarrini was as a student in London in the late 1970s. I was walking home along the A316 at Richmond one afternoon, vaguely noticing the busy rush-hour traffic hustling along the two-lane road. There was an old car repair shop on this road, and for a couple of weeks, I had been intrigued by a Fiat 2300 Ghia Coupe which had been languishing on the forecourt waiting for attention. Outside Race Retro with Jonathan Sharp

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

The view from a muddy field, the Live Rally stage at Race Retro

Race Retro is not just a show of static racing cars. (Read Roy P. Smith’s report of the show inside). A key element of the show is the live Rally stage in which various Rallying greats are demo’d enthusiastically by their passionate owners. The highlights on the stage this year for VeloceToday readers had to have been the Lancia Delta S4, a Ferrari 308 GTB Michelotto, a pair of Renault 5 Turbos and an Alpine 110.
