Italian Grand Prix, Sept. 12, 2010

When it comes to F1, there are certain expectations that the fans have. Racing in England will usually be interrupted by rain. Monaco’s harbor will have ridiculous boats in the harbor (with even more ridiculously thin women wearing not much more fabric than a handkerchief on them prancing around on said yacht) and Ferrari should win any race at Monza. Mary Ann Dickinson, a long-time Alfa Romeo enthusiast is also the founder and Executive Director of the Alliance for Water Efficiency in Chicago. Mary Ann was part of the American contingent which traveled to France over the Labor Day weekend to participate in the Hellé Nice Commemoration, and returned with both a story and photos of this long anticipated and very successful event.
Belgian resident Hugues Vanhoolandt, while visiting the U.S. for Monterey Car week, was able to get inside the Mullin Automotive Museum on a day when there were no other visitors. Sorta like having Pebble Beach all to yourself. This week he shares with you his superb no asses or elbows photos of his visit. We would all like to thank the staff at the Mullin Automotive Museum for their help and kind cooperation.
Brandes Elitch, Gary Wales and Tina Van Curen (Autobooks in Burbank) should be familiar names to most of us. Elitch has served up an interesting but sad commentary on a California institution cancelled by organizer Van Curen. Wales, now famous (among many other things) for being on the cover of the recent book, “Rebel Rebel” lost a prize possession which precipitated the cancellation, and he’s not the only victim. Is this happening at other such venues? Let us know.
And a word from one of our sponsors: Riding in a Ferrari is one way visitors at the September 19 Capitol Concours d’Elegance in Sacramento will support Shriners Hospitals for Children®- Northern California. For three hours during the Concours, the Neil Collepardi, President of Ferrari Club of America – Pacific Region Sacramento Chapter has organized an exclusive fundraising “Ferrari Ride to Remember”. Multiple Ferraris have been donated for the day by their personal owners, who will serve as drivers for anyone signing up for a ride. “We are thrilled to help raise money for children with serious medical needs.” said Collepardi. The club is asking for a minimum $100.00 donation per lap on Capitol Mall, which includes a souvenir photograph of the donor with the Ferrari. Ferrari models available include; Testarossa, 550 Maranello, 360 F1 , and an F430. In addition, a 1966 275 GTS Convertible Ferrari has been set aside by its owner for one special ride around Capitol Mall. All proceeds will be donated to the hospital and riders will be provided with a tax deductible receipt. The number of rides is limited and advance reservations are being accepted on behalf of the club at:http://www.shrinersconcours.com

Hellé Nice Marker Unveiled at Sainte-Mesme, France

Beautiful and permanent tribute to the Bugatti Queen, who also drove an Alfa Romeo. Both are included in the marker.
Story and Photos by Mary Ann Dickinson
A small but remarkable achievement…
On Saturday, September 4, 2010, under a beautiful sunny sky in the small village of Sainte-Mesme outside Paris, over 200 people gathered from three different countries to honor and commemorate the life of 1930s Grand Prix race driver Hellé Nice. Car Night in L.A. Goes Dark
By Brandes Elitch
One rotten apple…
Many large metropolitan areas have some kind of weekly or monthly version of “Car Night,” where car guys get together, show off their cars, and (typically) eat and drink for a few hours. [Read more…] about Car Night in L.A. Goes Dark

The Racing Bugs

Sandy Leith pushing hard with his 1931 Type 37. Leith, who is the Registrar of the American Bugatti Club, tell us about his car: My car was the second-to-last T37 built. It was bought by a New York banker on vacation, Elgood Lufkin, in Paris who brought it home with him. After one or two more owners and an engine blow-up in early ARCA competition, it received the 4-cylinder, Ford B engine in 1935 and raced as the 'Scrambling Egg' Bugatti-Ford special with the ARCA until 1940 when it disappeared. I found it in 1995 and have kept it, essentially, as found.

“Best Monterey Ever”… Lynch Wraps Up Holy Week

This image shows the setting of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance as well as any I've seen. Simon Moore brings his Alfa 8C2900A over the ramp in front of the crowd as part of the 100 Years of Alfa festivities. The show itself is in the background with Stillwater Cove lapping at its edges. The white sand beach in the far distance is Carmel and the Santa Lucia Range runs East along the valley of the Carmel River. Credit: Kimball Studios/Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

This week we review Michael Argetsinger’s books about Mark Donohue, who among many other things was responsible for setting up and driving the Kirk White Ferrari 512M at Sebring and Daytona. Of interest to our readers, Argetsinger will present an in-depth look at the legendary Penske Racing Ferrari 512M as raced by Mark Donohue, at the International Motor Racing Research Center on Saturday, Sept. 4. “No less a figure than Ferrari Chief Engineer Mauro Forghieri called this car ‘the finest prepared Ferrari I have ever seen,’” says Argetsinger. His talk – accompanied by many rare photographs will begin at 1 p.m. and is free and open to all and is located at 610 S. Decatur St., Watkins Glen. For more information: Mark Steigerwald, (607) 535-9044 or by email at mark@racingarchives.org.
Be sure to scroll all the way down for the five stories this week, posted from California to Virginia to Germany and find that photo of Donohue in a Bandini…
