Heroes of the Forest Reviewed

You’d expect a masterpiece from Dr. Mark Brinker, after his superb, multi-volume books on “Japan’s Most Astonishing Automobiles” and “The Amazing Denzel Sports Car.” And you won’t be disappointed with his latest effort — “Heroes of the Forest.”

The historic Pebble Beach Road Races, contested on the twisty backroads of the scenic Del Monte Forest, in Monterey, California, for seven remarkable years, from 1950 to 1956, attracted the top drivers and the best sports cars in the country. The grids included production models, many of which were modified, and clever homebuilt specials. More than a racing odyssey, this was a fabulous social event, set in a gorgeous location, with posh patrons hobnobbing among a host of drivers, both amateurs and professionals. The course was wickedly fast. With towering pines and glacial boulders located scarily adjacent to the impossibly narrow road, it could be deadly. Hundreds of cars competed until (spoiler alert) Ernie McAfee’s fatal crash in Bill Doheny’s Ferrari 121LM led to the establishment of the Laguna Seca Race Track. Allen R. Kuhn: Maserati 150S, 200S, 450S

Story and photos by Allen R. Kuhn

It’s time to dust off the old negs, with a camel hair brush, I might add. The ones that seem to want attention are from my Maserati archives. That’s good because they were some of my favorites. What drew me to them was their beautiful lines and stunning sounds. Another thing that drew them to me happened in 2007 at the Automobilia Monterey event during the August Car Week.

West Coast racer Bill Pollack passed away at the age of 92 on July 16, 2017. We originally published this appreciation on August 25, 2017, and a week later published a second article with material sent by our readers. We have combined the two articles for our Archives feature this week.

Red Wheels and WhiteSidewalls: An Excerpt

April 7, 2020 By pete

Bill Pollack stands next to Mr. Parravano’s Ferrari 340 America, (S/N 0150A).

We’ve asked various writers, historians and journalists what might be a good book to read during these times indoors. Books that you can’t put down, are easy to digest, (pardon the pun), and known to be page-turners (no, not the car!). Last week’s “Archie and the Listers” was discussed, and several people mentioned Bill Pollack’s book, “Red Wheels and Whitesidewalls.” The excerpt below is taken from Bill’s autobiography.

Excerpts from Red Wheels and White Sidewalls with a note from Jim Sitz

There were so many people that played a part in the 50’s evolution of the sport. There were admirals and generals and actors and kids. All got involved because it was exciting and fun. We were amateurs in the strictest sense of the word, and that was a big part of the charm.

In the fifties when the sport of motor racing was beginning to catch on and it was still amateur, most of the entrants were owner-drivers. A few lucky ones like myself had the rare privilege of driving someone else’s car. Without trying to go down a roster of drivers and workers of the fifties, there were a number that stick in my memory as friends.

And How! More on Bill Pollack

August 1, 2017 By pete

Pebble Beach 1952. Bill Pollack is about to win first overall in the most famous Cad-Allard of West-Coast sports car racing – here he’s about to pass Sam Weiss in the XK-120. The cars have just turned onto the main or pit straight and are coming out of a slight left hand bend. From here it is full throttle for a moment or two and then a very high speed bend just past the pits and a hard stop for a 90° right hand turn. Credit corsa@corsaresearch.com

Last week we published a tribute to the late Bill Pollack, and following that we received more interesting photos and comments, which deserve to be published as well. Ergo, here is a bit more about Bill Pollack with some rare images. But first, a few comments from our readers: [Read more…] about And How! More on Bill Pollack
