Wilton House Concours 2026

Wilton House

Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp

I have to say that I was feeling just a bit jaded as it has been so very busy this season, but I decided that I really should attend the first running of the ‘Concours des Legendes’ being held in the grounds of Wilton House just outside Salisbury Wiltshire, the ancestral home for more than 400 years of the Earl of Pembroke, and boy was I glad I did.

As the Earl says in his welcome message in the event daily newspaper “The concept behind this event has been a vision of mine for over a decade. I’ve always felt that the greatest cars deserve more than to be admired simply for their aesthetic. They deserve to have their stories told.”

Brian Johnson of AC/DC fame, ever the gentleman, and Nick Mason of Pink Floyd greet Amanda Stretton, a Broadcaster and racer.

You could call the event a combination of a car concours and a literary festival. Spread around the lawns of Wilton House were three large tents; a Legends tent, a Literary tent, and a Conversation tent. Over the three days of the event, over 60 guest speakers took to the various stages, a first-class lineup that included Andy Green OBE, The Fastest Man on Earth (the holder of the Land Speed Record), Richard Attwood, Tiff Needell, Lamborghini test driver Valentino Balboni, classic car dealer and TV star Wayne Carini, engineer and TV start Edd China, Endurance racer Jonny Mowlem, car designers Frank Stephenson, Frank Stephens, Ian Callum, and Kevin Rice, and a fantastic and hilarious group talk by AC/DC front man Brian Johnson, Nick Mason, and Masters Racing founder Ron Maydon which ended with a packed tent having laughed their heads off giving the group a standing ovation, a talk worth the price of entry by itself.

Andy Green OBE, the fastest man on earth, current holder of the Land Speed Record, 763.035 MPH

Another highlight for those of us able to attend on the Friday, was the first public showing of Manish Pandey’s new documentary film ‘Luca : Seeing Red’ a film exploring the amazing career of former Ferrari chairman and CEO Luca di Montezemolo. If you do get a chance to see it I do not think you will be disappointed.

In between attending all the various talks, and in addition to enjoying the cars on display on the lawn one could browse the art tent to see the works by various artists including a certain ex-Ferrari F1 driver, Mr Stefan Johansson. Or put you hand up and buy a car, a watch, or some jewelry at the onsite auction run by Dore and Rees; grab a bite to eat, or a drink and enjoy live music. Wilton House is currently not open to the public as they are working on the heating but just for the event one could tour some of the state rooms and admire one of the most important private art collections containing work by Anthony van Dyck, Rembrandt, Hans Holbein, Joshua Reynolds, Peter Lely, and Pieter Brueghel, and if that was not enough displayed in the beautiful cloister of the house was a stunning display, curated by Joe Twyman – author of ‘The Art of Racing’ of crash helmets, all hand painted by Mike Fairholmeas worn by the likes of Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill etc.

So much to see so to start with here is the first set of cars on display, more to follow later.

Simon Taylor’s 1937 Bentley 4 1/4 Litre Sedanca Coupe by Gurney Nutting. Commissioned in 1936 by Vicomtesse Yvonne Cahen d’Anvers in a style similar to her husband Anthony Gustav de Rothschild’s Hispano Suiza. Being a design in marked contrast to Gurney Nutting’s more reserved offerings it took so long to construct that the Vicomtesse lost interest and bought something else. HR Owen then sold it and after 20 years the car headed Stateside before being purchased by Simon in the 1990s and brought it home to the UK.

This 1925 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost, known as the ‘Kenya Ghost’, has a part to play in the start of conservation in Africa. The owner Captain Archie Ritchie was described simply as a great Gentlemen who had strong connections with Royalty. After being exposed to Safari’s in Kenya with HRH Prince Edward VIII he lobbied Parliament for an act to control hunting in Kenya and East Africa from which the Professional Hunters Association was formed. Cpt Ritchie, as Chief Game Warden, used his Ghost as his everyday car between 1925 and 1950. It is said that apart from the Governors car, Ritchie’s car, complete with a Hippo Tooth bonnet mascot, was the largest in Nairobi.

These modifications probably doubled the original cost of this top of the line Cadillac.

1958 Fiat Abarth 750 DB Zagato, completed on the 3rd April 1958 and first registered in California in July of that year to John Sheet, a director at Desilu Film Studios Los Angeles, well know for his work on the early Tarzan films. He kept the car until 1980 when it was purchased in a non-running condition by Glen Neyenhuisa Fiat collector in Scottsdale Arizona. During his ownership the car remained garaged but untouched until 1989 when Mr Neyenhuis and his son decided to strip the car of paint and remove the interior. No further work was undertaken and the car remained stored until Mr Neyenhuis passed away in may 2012. In 2017 the current owner purchased the car, shipped it to the UK where a full bare shell restoration was carried out.

Sold to its third owner who then stored it in a warehouse and never drove it. The current owner purchased it in 2020 with just 15,000 miles showing on the clock. They carefully preserved its originality while restoring the mechanicals to make it roadworthy. In 2024 it won the ’30 under 30′ award at the Concours of Elegance, Hampton Court.
