In 1980 I received a call from my good friend Jeff Glasserow, who worked in the film industry. Jeff worked for Ted Turner at the ‘Super Station WTBS and the all-new CNN center here in Atlanta.
Jeff called to inform me there was a new Burt Reynolds movie that was going to begin shooting in Atlanta in a few weeks. The subject of the movie was racing a Lamborghini in a coast to coast race called the “Cannonball Run.” The race invented by Brock Yates was officially called: “The Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash.” Brock Yates had written the script for the movie to be called The Cannonball Run and directed by famed stunt man and a participant in the original Cannonball run, Hal Needham.

The shooting location for the movie was located on the perimeter of I-285 close to the entrance of I-20 on the east side of Atlanta, Georgia. The Inn that was commandeered for filming was called the Old English Inn for obvious reasons. The movie execs, including the actors and extras, took over the property for quite some time.
The movie making at the Inn was almost non- stop. The action began in the morning and was still going into the night, depending on what sequence were being filmed. Outside of the film area, behind the barriers, is where the starlets could be found that wanted nothing more than to be “DISCOVERED”. These women were lined up behind the barricades in bunches. They wore full makeup and were dressed to the hilt including heels. Some of the ladies were so gorgeous that it was impossible to concentrate on what we needed to do.
My part was to supply some cars for the production and it was a toss-up on what cars would be most fitting for this movie. One of the cars we were going to include was a 1968 Lamborghini Miura P400 that was recently restored. Others that we used were a 1969 De Tomaso Mangusta, a 1972 De Tomaso Pantera GTS and a 1974 Dino Ferrari GTS that a close friend owned at that time.

Last Friday Alessandro Gerelli had a chance to visit the yearly Milano AutoClassica, held at the Fiera Milano Rho over the weekend of 24-25-26 November.
The event is broken up into several sections: A huge exhibiton hall with room for 2000 vintage cars for sale, the traditional motorsport event in the parking lot, another space just for the sale of spare parts, another section devoted to display current exotics, this year featuring Bentley, Lotus and McLaren, and the only show to feature the Ferrari Classiche with its own workshop. Reading and reviewing Aldo Zana’s book, “Monzanapolis,” (Review will be published soon) I was reminded that Dale La Follette had previously sent along some photos taken at Indy in 1950 by Bob Temple. It seems that now is a good time to present these photos, which are not only excellent as were all of Temple’s photos, but many were taken during practice or qualifying and are of cars that did not make the race including a one-off Auto-Union-like mid-engine car reportedly finance by Howard Hughes. Plus a few mysteries for our readers; the first to properly identify the engine in the lead photo above will win a copy of “Cuban Grand Prix 1957.”

This is a reality for Jeremy Browne, a man who has immersed himself in his passion for rallying and the Lancia marque for most of his life. Whilst his fascinating stories from competing all over the world offer remarkable distraction, it’s the journey that Jeremy has taken with his Lancia Fulvia 1.6 HF, a works car used by the factory to win the International Rally Championship (the forerunner to the WRC) in 1972, that brings us here today.

I suppose it is a sign of times that we are living but it does sadden me to read that to arouse the interest of the general public in an exhibition to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Ferrari, the second paragraph of the press release has to state that the exhibition displays Ferraris with a value of around £140 million. To me, and probably to most of you reading this, a Ferrari has nothing to do with perceived market value. To me it’s art, design, passion, history, triumph and tragedy, La Dolce Vita. We hope that Value does not come into it.
Anyway, wherever your bank is, if you happen to find yourself in London between now and April, I suggest you take a trip to Kensington to the Design Museum to catch their exhibition “Ferrari under the Skin.” [Read more…] about Ferrari Exhibition London: Under the Skin

It was not unlikely that Henry W. Uhle II should have decided to own a Grand Prix Maserati. He was, after all, an engineer and a yacht designer whose career spanned 48 years. From 1945 until retiring in 1987, he was a project engineer for Sparkman & Stephens Inc., New York City and before that, from 1941 until 1945, he was a naval architect for various shipyards. Born in 1920, Henry was also one of the breed of postwar U. S. foreign car enthusiasts and had the kind of mentality that could appreciate what the Maserati brothers were doing in Italy. The Maserati 8CM
The Maserati brothers built race cars with four, six, V16 and V8 configurations, but began in 1926 with the 1500 cc straight eight Type 26. The eights evolved, the 26B was a 2 liter, the Tipo 8C-1100 of 1929 were linered down Type 26 2 liters and was followed by the more refined 8C1500 and the 8C2500 and the hybrid 8C 3000.This wealth of experience culminated in the 8CM, first produced in 1933. It was Maserati’s first true Grand Prix car, designed with the new 750 kg formula in mind. A 69 mm x 100mm bore and stroke, 2992cc displacement, 260 hp at 5800 rpm via a supercharger produced a maximum speed of about 144 mph. [Read more…] about Maserati 8CM: A Portfolio

VeloceToday reader Robert Catt emailed is late last week. “A Fiat Abarth X1/9 prototipo is on a roundabout near Goring, Worthing (UK) on Thursday November 2, 2017, sadly to say burnt out. I think it has only been there a couple of days. No doubt West Sussex or Worthing Police are aware.”

From a total of 450 entries submitted for this year’s Royal Automobile Club/Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran car run, 49% were of French manufacture. Starting from Hyde Park at 7:02 am (sunrise) 405 cars headed off to Brighton to celebrate the 121st Anniversary run of the passing of the light locomotives on the highway act of 1896. This act of Parliament raised the speed limit for light locomotives weighing less than 3 tons from 4 to 14 mph, and also abolished the requirement for the vehicle to be proceeded by a person on foot carrying a red flag.
