For the first time in more than ten years, a major Concours d’Elegance was again organized in France. This took place in the Le Nôtre gardens in the Château in Chantilly, just north of Paris on September 7th. Organized by Peter Auto, already well-known for presenting the Tour de France Auto and Le Mans Classic, the concours offered three different challenges, all judged by an international jury. Sharp at Salon Prive and Hampton Court 2014

At Hampton Court: Fiat wanted to test its jewel like all alloy 2 liter Otto Vu engine so it turned to Siata who had the experience required. Built in 1953 this Siata 8V 208 CS Spider Corsa owned now by Jan De Reu has bodywork by Bertone. Fitted with triple carbs and Siata's high lift cam the engine produced 140 bhp (30 more than than the factory example). For years hidden away in Jarl de Boer’s basement.

In England early September is turning into car weeks, like Monterey, but extending almost 13 days. And in this case, instead of golf courses, it is a case of pick your favorite stately home. First might be a visit to the Duke of Northumberland’s estate, Syon Park in West London for a rather select event, “Salon Prive” where a lot of champagne is drunk, and lobster is eaten, and the stately lawns are covered by a fine selection of cars for the Chubb Insurance Concours. Perhaps the title d’Elegance does not hit an exciting cord: static cars, polished, primped and lined up but there are some of them that are fascinating not only because of the quality of the cars but of the variety. Obviously classics like Pebble Beach and Villa D’Este come to mind but it is time to add a third one, the Concours of Elegance, held at London’s Hampton Court Palace a week ago. RM Auctions London, September 8th, 2014

Osca Formula Junior of 1959 sold for $340k

On September 8th, the day after the Hampton Court Palace Concours of Elegance, a car auction was held in London by RM, with 81 cars of which 70 were sold.

Ferrari had many production cars on the list and the top price was reached by the 250 Tour de France berlinetta (chassis #0563) sold for about 7.8 million dollars.

A 275GTB made 3.1 million dollars, an Enzo for 1.5 million dollars and a F40 for 1.2 million dollars.

Gauld Remembers Bjorn Waldegard (1943-2014)

It always comes as a shock when you hear of the death of a friend, but the death of Swedish champion rally driver Bjorn Waldegard really hit home. I have known Bjorn for the past forty-five years and met up with him at various rallies in Europe and particularly in his native Sweden.

Bjorn was the typical tall blond Swede who didn’t say very much, but put him in a car and he really could make it sing. For most of his rallying life he was involved with the Porsche and Volkswagen importers to Sweden and it was in Volkswagens and Porsches that he is best known. Back in 1984, I got a call from a friend, Joe Duray, who had just found a Maserati 3500 for sale in the local paper. Back in those pre-Internet days, that was how you found things, along with going to swap meets and taking Hemmings Motor News. We went to look at it and he bought it. Gallery Vanhoolandt: Rolex Motorsports Reunion

In the Paddock was a small gathering of outstanding Maseratis that includes this 1928 Tipo 26B which is considered to be one of the oldest running Maseratis, if not the oldest. Behind it is the Fiat which served Maserati to transport their F1s and Sports cars throughout Europe between 1952 and 1957.
