Paris Retro with Hugues Vanhoolandt

Amilcars are rare, coupes even rarer. But from 1921 to 1939 Charles Duval bodied a great number of Amilcars and was particularly noted for his charming coupes, this one on a 1926 CGSS.



The famous T57 Atlantic that was recently restored by Paul Russell’s shop. This is the Bugatti that was involved in the 1955 accident. It is listed as chassis 57473.

This 1933 eight cylinder 1453cc record car was the third in the Citroen ‘Rosalie’ series of cars built for record attempts at Monthlhery. The first two were Rosalie I and the second Rosalie II, both six cylinder cars. ‘Petite Rosalie’ set records in 1933, going on for 300,000 kilometers, 133 days, and averaged 58 mph.

In 1971, the new Citroen SM was entered in the tough Moroccan Rally and won the first time out, arriving in Casablanca over an hour before the second place car.

In 1972, this foreshortened Citroen DS prototype was entered in the TAP rally in Portugal. The wheelbase was shortened by 60 cm. It was tuned to produce about 190 bhp.

This special Citroen CX 2400 Super Group 7 finished 9th in the ultra tough 1977 Senegal Rally. A similar car won the rally the next year. Only seven cars finished the Senegal and five were Citroen CXs.

1951 Talbot Lago T26 GS chassis 110057 was driven in the 1951 LeMans race by Fangio and Rosier. It has been owned and raced by the same owner for the past fifty years.

1938 Talbot Lago T23 chassis 93064 with body by Figoni was restored by the firm of Dominique Tessier.

Three cars which took part to the 24 hours of Le Mans with Renault 4 CV mechanical parts : 4 CV Vernet-Pairard (LM 53 & 54), Deutsch & Bonnet Panhard (LM 54) and 4 CV Ferry 750.

Bill Devin of California, famed for the Devin bodies of the 1960s, got his start creating the pretty and lightweight fiberglas Devin Panhard. It used the 2 cylinder engine of the Panhard sedan.

Who said Savonuzzi invented fins? The coachwork of this 1938 Peugeot 402 was designed by aerodynamics engineer Jean Andreau. Reportedly six prototypes were built.

Boxy, yellow, but somehow charming this ‘Peugette’ 104 with a modular body by PininFarina was shown at the Paris and Turin shows in 1976. It was a ‘transformable’ coupe and convertible.

In 1965 this Peugeot 404 Diesel set international class E records at Monthlhery. The successful return of the Peugeot Diesel at LeMans in 2010 was the result of man years of Diesel development.

    Fine pictures ! A shame they are partly hidden by intrusive advertising…

    For the records, Diesel Peugeot 908 HDI-FAP won Le Mans 24h in 2009, not in 2010, much to their chagrin…!

    What’s the story on the Vanwall underneath the Hall & Hall sign in the Talbot Lago picture? Was it a replica or original?

    I too find the photos cut off by advertising on my desktop, but not on my laptop. It’s probably not Veloce Today or the advertisers’ fault: more likely your screen format

    According to the plaque, this Vanwall is s/n VW9 and was driven in 1958 by
    Stuart Lewis-Evans. After the 1958 season, it has been prepared as a
    display car
    and retained by Vandervell Products.
    After Vandervell were purchased by GKN, they sold the car to the current
    owner,
    who is unknown to me.
