Consten-Alfa-Jags- Reims 1958

By Graham Gauld

All around the South of France there are former racing drivers tucked away in villages, or otherwise holed up in Monaco trying to preserve their race winnings. As a result one (this author, at any rate) tends to meet up with them from time to time and chew the fat. One of them who has become a good friend is Bernard Consten, best known for his multiple wins on the old original Tour De France event with his Jaguar 3.8 and Alfa Romeo. Bernard managed to combine rally driving with racing.

The supercharger induction indicates that this is a late Tipo 159. Note the air intake going from the top of the carburetor to the vent in the cowl. See many more images from the new museum below.

New Giulia Sedan Lacks Toolbox

July 21, 2015 By pete

Fifty years and a toolbox separate the new from the old Giulia sedans

bro-1-570

By Pete Vack

The master of the universe who will purchase a 2015 510 hp Alfa Giulia Sedan will be missing one important element that past and current owners of classic Giulias often cherish; the intimate relationship an owner develops with his automobile by doing the tuning, maintaining, and repairing oneself. It is doubtful that new Giulia owners will ever have a need to get down and dirty with a spanner or socket wrench in hand, much less do it for fun. Nor will they ever have to carry a box full of tools and spare parts. [Read more…] about New Giulia Sedan Lacks Toolbox

Chateau Impney Hillclimb Revived!

July 21, 2015 By pete

Fiat-2-570

“You are going where? To what? When?”, I asked our foremost British correspondent when he said he’ll drop by Impney on the weekend of July 11-12. This one was a new one on us. In fact, it is the very first revival of the Chateau Impney hillclimb that was staged on the grounds of the Chateau Impney, originally run from 1957-1967. And what a revival it was. The turnout, the weather, and above all Sharp’s imagery were all spectacular; what else can we do but run as many photos as possible? And so we did. In this segment we list the Italian and French cars in alphabetical order. In another segment, we allow room –click here – for the magnificent non-Italian and French entries; cars you will not see elsewhere and yet so very fascinating= Ed. Allow us to digress. Mr. Sharp has returned from his foray with a wealth of photos, and although not one car below was built in France or Italy, we feel that you will enjoy the article in any event. For all the Italian and French cars that appeared at Chateau Impney, click here. Ed.

Story and Photos by Jonathan Sharp

Chateau Impney is in Droitwich, near the middle of England. Originally held between 1957 and 1967 the Chateau Impney Speed Trials, as the event was originally titled, was organized by the local Hagley and District Light car club and attracted many of the top exponents of sprinting and hill climbing of the time including Tony Marsh, Phil Scragg and David Good.
