With Veloce Today’s ace British reporter Jonathan Sharp off covering the inaugural Anantara Concorso Roma in Italy, our own Goodwood insider Gary Axon has stepped in to report on just a few of the many highlights from this year’s 83rd Goodwood Members’ Meeting held on April 18-19, all with a Latin flavor.
In bright spring sunshine and unseasonably high temperatures, Goodwood turned the clock back 50 years to the blistering heat of 1976 by celebrating the spirit of that year’s motor racing season, when Brits James Hunt and Barry Sheene dominated, taking the World Championships in their respective Formula 1 and MotoGP sporting disciplines. Hunt’s ’76 Championship winning McLaren M23 and arch rival Niki Lauda’s Ferrari 312T were both present, the latter proving to be one of Maranello’s most successful Formula 1 chassis of all time.

Saturday morning, April 18th, dawned bright and sunny, in fact probably a bit too hot especially as it is only April. Having spent Friday morning running up and down Via Nazionale followed by a full day of site-seeing in Rome, we decided to catch a taxi to the Concorso held at Casina Valadier, rather than take the Metro or walk, very reasonable at only 10 Euros.

At Silverstone on Saturday April 25, the British Racing Drivers Club invited Sir Jackie Stewart to announce the renaming the club’s private grandstand in the name of Jim Clark.

Baby Bugatti, the Art of the Automobile for Children, by Jean-Pascal Viault, is a 456 (the same number as Baby Bugattis listed in company records) page blockbuster, the Baby Bugatti Bible, an effort almost beyond comprehension. From April 14th to 21st, Ireland became both a stage and trial, a setting and challenge. Beneath a shifting sky—at times slate-grey, at times liquid light—a caravan from another age took to the road. To the sound of an Irish ballad that seemed to rise from the wind itself, and to the lilting rhythm of the jig, nearly thirty Bugattis, Amilcars, and Rileys carved their path westward, into the raw soul of Connemara. More than a thousand kilometers were devoured between winds and tides, across rugged land, peat, and ever-shifting horizons.

The first event of the first Anantara Concorso Roma, the Giro d’Anantara, held on the 17th April, took lucky entrants on a journey through the heart of Rome to Frascati, and back to Rome. The start point was the Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Hotel, finishing at the Casina Valadier in the Villa Borghese, where the main event was to be held over the weekend, with suitable stops for coffee with a lunch break at the Villa Aldobrandini in Frascati.

Now that is my kind of coffee shop. Maserati Tipo 26 located in the coffee shop at the Anantara Palazzo Naiada Hotel, the base hotel for the whole event.

This is a continuation of the start of the Giro d’ Anantara on April 17th. I was so blown away by the cars I saw outside the Anantara hotel I had not realized that there was another selection waiting for the start of the tour across the square, I am so glad that somebody told me as it would have been a shame to have missed them. So I hurriedly photographed as many cars as I could as they snaked their way through the streets. This was a rare event in Rome, and apparently no one minded being a little late for work.

WEC 6 Hours at Imola, Hypercars

For the third consecutive year on April 19 the Imola circuit located in Emilia-Romagna, hosted a round of the World Endurance Championship. However, this time, following the events in the Middle East, it hosted the first round of the championship, as the inaugural race scheduled for Qatar had to be postponed until later in the year.

Like their Hypercar counterparts, the Ferrari 296 LMGT3s were not a success in their home country. The #54 finished a distant 11th, while the #21 took 6th place in its class.

While the Hypercar prototype category boasts 8 manufacturers and 17 cars entered, the GT category, known as LMGT3, features 9 manufacturers, each fielding two cars. Although Porsche, champion of this category in 2024 and 2025, remains the favorite, it was another German manufacturer, BMW, that took the victory at Imola.

A return to two SCCA race weekends made up Road America’s calendar for 1957, the first in June followed by early September. June offered four events, three on Saturday and a 38-lap feature on Sunday. All told the weekend was best described as fun-to-watch club racing.

Sloane Street Concours, London
Just to prove the event was in London, the rear end of the R33 and a London Double Decker Bus, also known as the Boris bus, so named after Boris Johnson, the then Mayor of London.

I was unable to make the London edition of Salon Prive, but as luck would have it the organizers decided to do a small preview under the title of ‘The Sloane Street Concours’ on April 11th. For those not familiar with London shopping streets, Sloane Street and the surrounding environs is home to some very upmarket shops, as you will see from looking at the background. Great if you like shopping (yuk) and have a Gold card.
